Standing up for South Gloucestershire

Lib Dem's win in Downend by-election

12.17.00am GMT Sat 23rd Aug 2008

Downend Liberal Democrats are celebrating the election of their excellent new Councillor, Craig Whittaker in the Downend West by-election. Craig stood on a platform of saving local bus services cuts, improved cleansing at the Willows shopping centre and reducing rat run traffic. We also heard directly from Downend residents their anger at rising taxes and household bills. Many local residents expressed surprise that the Tory run Council failed to put forward a candidate, maybe they did not want to have to explain why their Parliamentary Candidate voted to downgrade Frenchay?

Anyhow, following Labour's poor performance in Downend (oh and Glasgow East!), there are calls for Gordon Brown's resignation.

So maybe our success here might pave the way for a change of policy and a change of Leader? Watch this space!
