Emma Bone Slams Tory U-Turn on Recycling Promise5.50.41pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 28th Aug 2007
Following recent claims by the Conservative South Gloucestershire Council that they will increase South Gloucestershire's recycling rate to 50%, local Liberal Democrat campaigner, Emma Bone, was amazed to discover the Tory administration has rejected an offer for a free scheme to recycle tetra paks. Emma Bone (Prospective Lib Dem MP for Filton and Bradley Stoke), declared: "I'm simply astonished as to why the Conservatives haven't signed up to this free scheme that would have allowed people across South Gloucestershire recycle their tetra pak cartons. David Cameron may talk green but it's clear that under his leadership, the Tories care no more for the environment than they did 10 years ago. Liberal Democrats lead by example on tackling climate change and that's why Lib Dem Councils up and down the country have already signed up to this free win-win scheme" Lib Dem Councillor Peter Tyzack (Pilning & Severn Beach) : "Every year households throw out around 2.3kg of cartons which could be recycled instead of thrown away. We can get 5 bring sites for tetra paks in South Gloucestershire for free and it's possible we could boost the number of sites by working with local supermarkets. I am amazed and appalled that the Conservative administration didn't sign up to this free scheme to recycle them. We get fine words from them promising to improve on the previous Liberal Democrat led Council's recycling rate but no real action!"
