Lib Dem Cllrs. have been campaigning for more than 5 years on behalf of South Glos local residents for kerbside collection of plastic bottles and food waste. Now plans are in place to roll out kerbside collections across the area by March 2011.
Kerbside collection of plastic bottles has been put in the Lib Dem budgets in 2005, 06, 07, 08 and 09 - the Conservative administration backed by Labour have refused to back this initiative year on year; until now.
The Conservative administration have failed miserably to achieve their high profile March 2010 recycling target of 50% and now probably realise that they should have listened to the demands of local residents and the Lib Dems and made these changes years ago as we suggested. Why is kerbside collection so important? Because:
Plastic bottles are made from oil which is a precious and finite resource - doorstep collection will increase considerably the amount of plastic bottles collected and decrease the number that are dumped in landfill sites.
Food waste currently makes up more one third of the weight of waste in our black bins across South Gloucestershire - when put into landfill tips, it creates methane gas which is 21 times worse than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas and attracts heavy landfill and environmental (LATS) penalties.
Evidence from other local authorities which collect food waste shows that the amount of food wasted drops considerably when householders realise how much food is dumped and how much money they are wasting. When jobs are being cut and money is in short supply, every penny counts.
Kerbside collection of plastic bottles and food waste are good for local residents, for council tax payers and for the environment - thank goodness we've finally got through to this Tory administration
