Lib Dem PPC John Kiely has written to the South Glos Conservative Leader to ask that the Council do not join with Bristol City Council in building a mass burn incinerator at Avonmouth. The Council is currently in a consortium with the other former Avon Councils and they are working on a PFI bid to build a mass burn rubbish incinerator at Avonmouth.
John adds "There are many problemswith the mass burning of rubbish in this way, firstly it releases toxic fumes into the atmosphere. Also because the wind blows up the Bristol Channel it will affect large parts of the Constituency including Hallen, Severn Beach, Pilning and Easter Compton. There is a financial pressure of building an incinerator using PFI, you have to keep the incinerator in constant use to repay the PFI charges. Which will probably mean accepting rubbish from other parts of the West Country and even Wales. With even more heavy lorries travelling our already congested Towns and villages. I have therefore decided to write to the Council to ask them to reject a mass burn incinerator."
